Alban Samuels isn’t even cold yet when I grab my bag and climb out the window of the four-story building we’ve been living in. I lift the neck of my shirt up and wipe the tears off my face, hating to leave him like this but knowing I don’t have a choice. Alban is my father and I couldn’t leave him. Not then. And even now, it takes everything I have to actually climb out the window. I look back at him and he looks more at peace now than he probably ever has. We were able to say our goodbyes and it was only after I promised him that I would leave that he finally gave up. It’s almost like he knew that my only chance of surviving was if he died. I hate to even think it, but I imagine it’s true. I felt him take his last breath. My head was lying on his chest, and I could feel the life fade out of him. I set here quietly, not wanting to alert the rest of the house of what has happened, but wanting one last minute alone with the man that has stood by me and cared for me since the beginning.

I’ve grown up in the Eaters MC. My father was once the vice president of the club. Until he got too sick. Some of them said it was because he got too soft. But whatever the reason, the club got worse once my dad got sick. They were always bad, but now they’re downright evil. I look at the goosebumps on my arm even thinking about it. I’ve seen it all, more bad, unimaginable things than I’ll ever be able to forget in my lifetime. I’ve wanted out since I was ten years old and I saw one of the Eaters kill an innocent man right in the middle of downtown. I’ll never forget it. The Eater shifted and his bear was no match for the man trying to pay for his groceries at the open market. The bear pawed him and sliced him open with his strong claws. With the blood pouring from his mouth, the Eater walked away on all fours, eating the meat the man had just paid for. There were people all around us, but not one person intervened. No one stepped in. I watched as the man gasped for breath and finally took his last one. It’s as if his eyes are forever ingrained in my mind and I swear I’ve had nightmares about that incident ever since then. From that day forward, I dreamed of one day leaving the Eaters MC.

The one thing holding me back was my father. My mother was a club twinkie and she left me behind with Dad when she decided to move on to the next club. My dad saw the bad things and saw what the club was becoming, but he couldn’t leave. The life of an Eater is all my father and I have ever known. On my fifteenth birthday, I was ready to go. I had it all planned out and I was leaving. Instead of leaving, though, that day I was sentenced to stay at the Eaters club and I didn’t know for how long, I just knew I couldn’t leave. That day was the day that my dad was diagnosed with the big C. I couldn’t leave then, even though he begged me to. He knew what would come of me without him here. He knew that the club was merely biding their time until they thought of me as free. He’s been sick for a long time – over three years - and I just couldn’t force myself to leave. And they knew it. The very little freedom they did give me is because they knew I wouldn’t leave my father. But now that he’s gone, there’s nothing holding me back. I have to get out of here before Silver, my half-brother and vice president of the Eater club, finds out that our dad is dead. Once he and the rest of the club find out that I’m no longer tethered to them, they will force me to stay by any means necessary.

I’ve watched Silver these last few weeks. Dad has been sick for a while, but lately, he’s been even weaker. I could see in Silver’s eyes that he knew our dad was passing soon. I try to remember the Silver from my youth. At one time, he was a good person. I don’t know what changed him, but now he’s pure evil. He’s not anything or anyone that I would want to mess with. He would watch our dad, and I could tell there’s no love there, he was just waiting, biding his time, waiting for Dad to die.

My dad saw it too. He knew what Silver had become. He’d warned me time after time to get out of here while I could, but I never listened. I couldn’t. But now is my time. My only shot. I take one last look at my father and step out onto the ledge. I scale the side of the building, the bulky backpack making it harder and even more awkward than all the times I’ve practiced. I walk the ten feet, holding on to the side of the building with my fingertips pressed into the rough brick. When I finally reach the fire escape, I step quietly onto it, remembering each and every step that creaks and grinds at my weight. When I finally get to the bottom and let myself drop to the ground, I finally release the breath I’ve been holding.

I look up at the window I just escaped from. I don’t know what I expect, maybe a sense of freedom, but it’s not there. Only deep grief that I’ve left my father for them to bury. He deserved better. He deserved more. But I have a promise to keep. His dying wish. I force myself to look away at the Klamath mountains, which are only visible because of the full moon. I run then. I run as fast as my legs will let me and I don’t look back. It’s going to be risky, because I’m running straight for New Law Territory, the one area that the Eaters will not dare to follow me.

It seems like I’ve walked for hours, but I’m not sure it’s been that long. The need to shift is strong and I’m barely able to keep my spirit bear from coming out and running the rest of the way. The only thing stopping me is the smell of the coppery metallic scent in the wind. It’s the scent of blood, hunger, of evil. It’s the smell of the Eaters. I know they are nearby. It could be a coincidence, or it could be they already discovered my father dead and me gone and are already tracking me down. I want to shift and run as fast as I can but I don’t. I can’t. There’s no hiding my white bear, not at night and not with the moon out like it is. I would be discovered quickly. And if I’m caught, I’m dead. I don’t think I’ll ever get a chance like this again.

I tug at the hat on my head to make sure it’s covering my white-blond hair. Without it, my hair is like a beacon in the night and could easily be seen if I hadn’t had the forethought to cover it. I walk quietly through the forest, looking every which way, my nerves about to get the best of me. Every sound, every snap of a twig, every animal noise has me trembling and on edge.

The closer I get to New Law territory, the more nervous I get. The feud between the New Law and Eaters has gone on for a long time. I’m in a bad position, because if either club finds me, I’m done. My father was one of the founders of the Eaters and that alone is enough reason for the New Law to kill me if they find me.

But I’m desperate. I have to escape Silver and the plans he has for me. At first, I thought he planned for me to become one of the working girls at the club. But if that were true, it would have been a blessing compared to his real plans. He allowed me to stay a virgin just for this reason. I was always surprised that he kept his men, his club brothers, away from me. But now I know why. He plans to sell me to the highest bidder. He’s watched me grow up, he’s my half-brother, my blood relative, but
that means nothing to him. No, money is more important.

Lost in thought, I keep walking. I keep thinking of my father and I still can’t believe I left him like that. All I can do is pray that the Eaters will bury him, give him a proper service. But I’m not holding my breath. I try to watch where I’m going, but also keep my head down. I walk so long that I come to an opening of the forest. There’s a big building at the opening and I can hear voices. I discover quickly that I’m in New Law territory and not just their territory, but I’m on the land that houses their clubhouse. If they find me, they will kill me for sure.

I turn to switch directions when a soft voice stops me. She’s at the edge of the house, and I’m surprised she can even see me from that far. I must stick out more than I thought. Her voice carries in the wind. “Hey, are you okay?”

Alarmed, I turn around and step back from her. “Yes, yes, I’m sorry, I’m just a little lost, but I’m leaving.”

She holds her hands up to stop me, walking toward me. “Wait, you don’t have to leave. I can help you.”

I eye her up and down, watching as she looks at me earnestly. If I shift, I know I could take her, but I don’t want to spill blood for no reason. I’ve heard many stories of the New Law and from all the things I’ve heard, I know they are nowhere as evil as the Eaters. However, I’m sure it will be a different story if they find out I’m one of them, one of their enemies. So I just won’t tell her.

I pull my pack off my back and start to unzip it. “I will give you money if you can give me help. I’m running from someone… someone that will do horrible things to me if he finds me. I just need help getting through the New Law territory.”

I wait for her answer or for her to ask me more questions, but she doesn’t. She holds her hand out and I place the bills into her open palm. She fists it as soon as I put the crumpled bills there. “Sure, yes, I’ll help you. I mean, us women have to stick together, right?”

I nod my head, smiling at her. Thank goodness.

She holds her hand out. “I’m Lisa.”

“Penny. My name’s Penny,” I tell her and shake her hand. She moves beside me and where we are standing, I can see what looks like a fire on the other side of the clubhouse. I just stand there, waiting on Lisa to tell me our next move.

She tugs on my hand. “There’s too many club members outside. If we have any chance of avoiding them, you’ll have to be hidden inside the clubhouse until I can help you slip out.”

My first instinct is to say no and I jerk my hand back to stop. She turns around to look at me and innocently says, “I can sneak you out when everybody crashes. It will probably be three or four in the morning, but that will be the safest.”

I look at her, straight into her eyes, looking for any signs that she’s being dishonest, but her eyes are wide and clear and doesn’t blink as she looks back at me. Finally, I nod my head and let her take my hand again.

We get to the back of the clubhouse and the closer we get, I can hear the people talking. But I swear my heart is beating just as loud.

I stay close to Lisa and follow her inside. Once in, I can’t help but look around. It’s nothing like the Eaters’ clubhouse. This one is clean and doesn’t even smell bad. It’s a big room with tables and chairs. This has to be the main part of the club and I have to admit I’m glad that it’s a nice night and everyone is outside.

I don’t get to look long because she’s pulling me down a hallway and the first door we come to, she opens it and pushes me inside. “Okay, Penny. Get in the closet and stay there. Don’t come out. If I’m gone too long, they’ll come looking for me. But I promise, I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

I step into the closet and before Lisa starts to shut the French doors, I stop her, knowing that she’s put herself in danger by helping me. “Thank you, Lisa.”

She just shrugs her shoulders. “It’s okay, you know, us girls—”

“We have to stick together.” We both answer at the same time. She giggles and even after the day I’ve had, I laugh with her.

She shuts the door and I hear her walk out of the bedroom. Taking off my pack, I set it down on the floor of the closet and sit down on top of it. I take a few deep breaths, trying to calm my racing heart so that I won’t be discovered. Tired, I lay my head down on my arms that are resting on my knees, still waiting for that sense of freedom. I did it. I made it out of Eater territory. That alone is a feat. Now, just one more step. I just have to get out of New Law territory and I’m free.

No more than three minutes pass when the bedroom door opens and a man and woman enter the room. The slats are angled and I can make out the two people. I freeze in my position and try not to make a sound. She’s laughing and I can hear him grumbling.

“C’mon, Rita. I got shit to do,” he tells the woman, even though he doesn’t try to stop her as she pulls him into the room.

The woman pushes him backwards on the bed, grabbing for the button on his jeans. “C’mon, Bruin, I want to see your huge cock.”

I sit there as quietly as possible, but I can’t stop myself from looking. The woman pulls his pants down his hips and frees his cock. Even though he’s not hard, his cock is long and thick and I can’t take my eyes off him.

I want to tell Rita no, but the praise she’s giving my dick is amusing. She’s a club twinkie and I’m pretty sure that Sayer is about to claim her. I doubt he knows that she’s not wanting to be claimed, though. Not the way she’s pushing herself on me. I fully intended to push her away before she started kissing and licking me, but I’d been distracted by the sound I heard in the closet and the smell that fills the room.

  Someone is in there.

Being a bear shifter, I notice everything. And right now, I can hear someone in the closet, trying to take calming, controlled breaths. I also notice her scent. I’ve never smelled it before, but I’m taking deep breaths trying to drag it in, already addicted to it.

I can feel the eyes of someone on me but it isn’t a predatory gaze. The sensation that rushes over my body is more like a curious hot stroke over my cock and my dick twitches at the thought.

I look down at the carpeted floor near the closet doors instead of directly at them to see movement behind the slats and can make out the full feminine figure behind the doors.

Whoever it is, she’s got big, round full breasts and the thought of the sexy stranger watching me get a blow job turns me on a lot more than Rita and her efforts. I look at Rita and realize that she’s not even touching me. She’s merely staring between my legs and I grab her by the shoulders and push her away. She barely notices as she works her hand between her thighs.

I leave Rita on the bed and edge a little closer to the closet, but before I can make it to the doors to open them and find out who is behind them, Lisa, one of the club sluts, comes bursting into the room with Deator, Ronan, Johnny, Zeus and Teddy.

They all ignore the half-naked Rita on the bed pleasuring herself. Lisa points to the closet. “She’s in there.”

My first instinct is to stop them. I don’t know why, but I don’t want all of my men, my brothers, seeing her. The urge to stop Deator is strong, but I contain myself barely.

Deator opens the doors wide and stands back. Johnny has a gun drawn and is pointing it straight at the closet. One false move and he will obliterate whoever is in there, I have no doubt.

We all peer inside the closet and there stands a blond-haired woman, a shifter, I realize when I look at her closely. She looks vaguely familiar and when she raises her chin, her light blue eyes pierce me, and it’s then I recognize her resemblance. There’s only one person that I’ve seen with eyes like hers. She is related to Alban, a member of the rival Eaters MC.

Her eyes flick down my body and when they land on my exposed hard cock, it grows even harder. She licks her lips and just the sight of her extended pink tongue sends a jolt through my body. I tell myself she’s an Eater; she’s off limits. My mind obeys, but not
my body. Pre-cum drips to the floor, but I’m not watching that; no, I’m watching her and she’s watching me.

The Eater should be scared, she should be begging for her life right now, but instead she’s staring at me and my hard cock. Trying to get some kind of control, I stuff my hard cock back into my pants and button up. When she no longer has my cock to stare at, her gaze moves up my body and finally settles on my face. There’s a hint of fear in her eyes, but even looking at her, I know that if need be, she can hold her own. I have a feeling this is not the worst situation that she’s ever been in and that that thought alone has me rubbing my hand across my chest and trying to figure out exactly what’s going through my head. Why do I care?

She’s an Eater, hiding in my closet. Was she sent here to spy or is she an assassin? I look around the room at the bloodthirsty looks on the men around me. They’re out to get the Eaters and they won’t hesitate to use her to get their revenge.

Deator, the president of the club and probably the one man with the biggest hatred for the Eaters, grabs her by the shoulders and pulls her out. She does as she’s told and my hands flex at my sides, wanting to pull her away from him and hide her behind me. Until recently I’ve never thought about going against Deator, but I have to admit when he didn’t want the club to back up my cousin Bree when she got to town, well, I saw a new side of Deator then and I don’t like it.

Even while Deator is pushing her out the door, she’s turning her head and her blue eyes are trained on me. Can she feel it too? This attraction? Or is it something more? I muscle my way between the guys to walk next to Deator. I don’t want to examine why I do it, but I do know that a calm comes over me when I get next to her and have her only an arm’s length away. There’s something that tells me, either it’s my raging pulse or the way I can’t catch my breath, that I’ve finally met my match… and she’s a fuckin’ Eater.
